Battle between Vrsaparva and Niskumbha, besides Prahlada and Kala

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the Daitya king Vrsaparva who was resplendent like Aruna-fought with

Niskumbha who was resplendent like Aruna, the Visvedeva.

His face displayed his anger. He was stretching his bows again and again observing the bow of his enemies, he at once said to his charioteer.

"O charioteer, the gods getting united, kill our soldier in the battle field. Therefore you drive my chaiot (to the battle ground) at once.

I intend to kill the gods in the battle ground who praise their own prowess there, because they have created differences among the Daityas.

Thereafter, he moving seated over the chariot drawn by the fast moving horses, the great asura Vrsaparva the foremost among the warriors, getting enraged started shooting arrows at the enemy.

At that point of time, the gods could not stand in the war, what to speak of the waging of the war. Having been wounded with the arrows of Vrsaparva all the gods fled away from the Dceens.

Finding his warriors and his own relatives, having fallen into the clutches of death, Vrsaparva the asura, halted there.

Finding Niskumbha — a Visvadeva there, all the prominent gods collected there and. all of them stood there surrounding him.

Finding Niskumbha — the foremost of the gods standing there, all the gods were enthused finding him so standing with his weapons.

Finding Niskumbha resembling a mountain, standing in the battle ground, Vrsaparva started showering the rain of arrows over him, exactly in the same way, as Indra — the lord of gods pours rain and covers the mountain.

Caring the least for the arrows which wounded his body the valorous Niskumbha, took his position with the warriors at the start of the war.

The immensely valorous Visvedeva, smilingly in the battle ground, shaking the earth, attacked Vrsaparva, with great force. He was resplendent at the time of attack. At that point of time, he looked like the fire in flames.

The immensely illustrious Niskumbha, leaving the chariot, got very much enraged. Then he uprooted a tall palm tree.

Thereafter Niskumbha, threw the palm tree over Vrsaparva. But the valorous Danava, held the tree with one of his hands, and uttered lion's roar aloud, then rotating it he threw back the palm tree at the army of gods which killed many of warriors of the gods, besides the elephant with riders, the charioteers with chariots.

The enraged Danava, who frightened the gods, was viewed by Niskumbha, who getting enraged and uttered a loud lion's roar.

Then the valorous Niskumbha, shooting three sharp arrows, which could penetrate the sensitive spots, wounded Vrsaparva.

Then the Daitya known as Vrsaparva shooting the terrific arrows and Saktis, wounded Niskubha, after which, blood flowed from his body, on earth having been so wounded.

Then all the gods, frightened from Vrsaparva, breathing deeply, fled away from the place.

The gods having been frightened by Vrsaparva, trampled over one another, and while fleeing, they looked back again and again. Then Vrsaparva, well-versed in the waging of war, forced Niskumbha and his warriors to lay down in their arms.

In the same battle, Prahlada, the son of Hiranyakasipu was fighting with Kala (the god of death).

Sukracarya — the preceptor of the demons, had performed all the essential rites, for Prahlada for gaining victory quitckly.

He poured ghee in the fire and bowed his hand before the Brahmanas. At that point of time the wind was carrying the fragrance of ghee, poured by him in the fire.

Sukracarya the guru, had bound various types of flower garlands, for the sake of his victory.

Sukracarya — the son of Bhrgu, had performed the rites for peace process, for Mahatma Prahlada, who was to fight with Kdla — the god of death.

There were ten thousand disciples of Mahatma Sukracarya, who perfomed recitation of the mantras (for the victory of the Daityas) and their welfare.

He had performed an anusthana (retualistic performance) as prescribed in the Atharvaveda, offering prayer to the great soul, which was quite appropriate for achieving victory.

Then the Danavas wearing kavacas, jumped above and surrounded the king Bali, surrounded Prahlada who was well- versed in all the scriptures, who never deserted the battle ground, was learned, ascetic like, having performed the welfare rites, the great archer.

Prahlada arrived the mounted over the chariot, which could destroy the enemy chariots. It was an excellent and divine chariot, filled with weapons, and appeared like a mountain with vajra.

As the sky is overcast with clouds in the rainy season, similarly, the peak of the Meru mountain, within two ghadis (forty four minutes) echoed with the sound of the thunder of the Daityas, and patting of their thighs.

The Daityas who form of waging the war, wearing the garland of lotus flowers, decorated with costumes and ornaments, leaving a side the kiths and kins, rushed to the battle ground.

The gigantic weapons, beautiful shields, the kavacas, head gears, were worn by them they carried the bows in their hands became invincilble for the powerful Prahlada.

Ahead of him, in the battle ground, thousands of demons proud of their strength like the lions and tigers, whose waists were decorated with waist bands of small bells, marched on thundering aloud.

In the invincible army, there were seventy thousand chariots. The number of the elephants was the same.

In the centre of the army formations, was lodged Kalanemi — the great asura, who stretching his bow in a terrible manner, thundered with the loud laugh.

A lakh of valorous Danava warriors marched ahead of the Daitya Kalanemi.

Both the armies were equally placed and spread in a vast area. The formations made by the Danavas was impragnable from all the sides, by the gods.

Danavas, the great archers, had sixty thousand chariots in the battle ground. The innumerable weapons were beyond counting.

The Danava of mountain size, held in their hands the gadas, parighas, swords, spears, mudgaras and pattisas, which appeared quite glamorous.

They thundered, uttered lion's roar, and shouted aloud repeatedly. Their prowess was great. They were not to desert the battle field, therefore they fought the war enthusiastically.

Thousands of trumpets were sounded, besides the conches were blown and the kettledrums were played upon. The sound of the fast moving horses and the elephants was heard. Together with these sounds, the sound of the playing on the kettledrums, appeared like the thundering of the clonds.

The sound of the blowing of the couches and kettledrums was particularly heard.

With the blowing of the couches, sounding of the trumpets, rumbling sound of the chariots, appeared as if the sky was issuing the tumultuous sound.

The vast army like the vast ocean in the battle ground, surrounded Prahlada who had been fighting like Kala, Yama or Antaka.

The immensely valorous Prahlada, caused tumultuous noise which was horrible, which caused panic in the three worlds. As a result of this all the living beings cried in panic.

The comets started falling from the sky. The forceful winds started blowing. The she-jackals vomited fire, while crying.

The valorous Prahlada, who was awful in the Battle, then spoke these words while laughing.

"O great warriors, I shall today display the strength of my arms. All of you shall witness the gods killed by me in the battle ground.

Such of the demons, whose kiths and kins had been killed by the gods in the battle, those Danavas shall offer the flesh of the gods for their close (dead) relatives.

The dust that has been raised in the battle ground, shall be subsided by me, with the flow of the blood of the enemies.

The place where the sun is not visible due to darkness, and the dust raised by the army has become red in colour, the shining arrows shot by me shall shine in the sky like the fire flies.

All of you be delightful. Shed away panic from the gods. Today in the battle field I shall kill Yama-the god of death with my bow.

In the battle ground, killing the gods as well as Yama from close quarters, I shall please the king Bali today who is the foremost of all the Daityas.

My quivars are everlasting which are never short of the arrows, which resemble the poisonous makes. Those of the warriors who are desirous of their lives, cannot face me in the battle field.

With the killing of the enemies, I shall find peaceful at heart, the king would develop affection for me. In case a warrior is himself killed in the war, then he would dwell in heaven. Therefore, there is no other way than the waging of the war.

Therefore О foremost of the Danavas, shedding away the fear, kill all the enemies in the battle field and enjoy all the comforts in the Nandana forest.

Prahlada — the foremost of the Danavas, thus addressing the commanders of his army, started destroying the vast army of the god of death appropriately with force.

They were well-versed in the use of all the weapons. They never got defeated in war, and were proud of the strength of their arms, therefore they always fought in the war in front.

The sixty thousand charioteers carrying various types of weapons, headed by the immensely strong Prahalada, and his real sons, had all joined the battle.

All of them had performed the vast yajhas offering huge daksinas. All of them were compassionate, auspicious minded and always truthful.

They were charitable, sweet spoken, spokespersons on the literary subjects, who loved their own wives, having controlled their sense organs, devoted to dharma, besides being truthful.

All of them performing the yajha and studied the Vedic and post-Vedic literature regularly. All of them were well-versed in archery, and could display repeatedly their prowess.

Their prowess resembled the intoxicated elephants. They were the destroyers of the enemy army. They could destroy the huge trees with their kicks.

Their minds were always devoted to waging the wars. Their eyes remained red in anger. They pressed their lips under their teeth, the valorous Daityas thundered aloud, uttering lion's roar. They were pleased by patting their thighs.

With the sound of veena and conches, together with lion's roar, then suddenly the huge Daitya taking a long jump arrived in the battle ground and received the weapons.

The valorous Danavas were filled with rage carrying the bow. They could string the bows of the size of the palm trees and started fighting Kala (Yama) in the battle field.

All the asuras wore the ornaments of molten gold. They were clad in white costumes. All of them were filled with pride and were desirous of achieving the heaven. They were anxious for the victory of their own side.

The Daitya army comprising of the elephants horses and chariots decorated with the flags and banners, the Daitya army was decorated of moving over the path to heaven, was looking glarmorous.

Then the immensely valorous god of death, surrounded by many of the diseases, marched for waging the war. They had gigantic bodies and were repeatedly uttering lion's roars.

All of them observed the vast Daitya army standing before them.

Observing the forece of the gods, with several of the diseases, he drove them in the reverse direction.

Kaladeva having red eyes, and surrounded with his vast army, entered the army of Danavas and started destroying the same.

In the battle field, Kaladeva, using the weapons like danda, mudgara was Pattisa, ponced upon the valorous and dangerous army of Prahlada.

The soldiers diseases of Kala, shot in the battle field the weapons like arrows, Saktis, Rstis, swords, spears, musalas, gadas, parighas, wounderful axes, several types of bows, fire arms made of Iron, and several other weapons, over the Danavas.

In the battle field several of the diseases killed many of the asura commanders. The Daityas also on their part destroyed several of the diseases.

Many of the warriors, were churned with the spears. Some of them were wounded with parighas and other weapons.

Several of them were cut into two pieces with swords, who started floundering falling on the earth. The Danavas, using several types of weapons, tore out the diseases.

The diseases also used several types of excellent weapons, like swords, musalas with sharp blades, Prasas, tomaras and mudgaras besides the axes and killed a large number of Danavas, cutting them into pieces.

The valorous Vyadhis, cut the Daityas into pieces with the use of mudgaras, pattisas, and several other weapons. Many of them were killed with strike of fists.

With the breaking of the teeth of one another, besides tearing out of the eyes, all the warriors started vomiting blood from the mouth. The thrilling battle ground was filled with cries of the wounded soldiers who were also roaring like the lions, which appeared quite horrible.

The beards of the warriors fighting the wars, besides the other limbs, and fell down on earth with striking of the fists and administring of the slaps.

At that point of time, a river of blood started flowing with tumultous noise. The tears served as the foam. The banners served as the whirlpools, the severed arms, were like the serpents. The weapons of spears and Saktis resembled the fish. The river was filled with crocodiles in the form of bows. It had stone slabs in the form of elephant tusks, filling the rivers. The flags looked like the trees standing in it.

Prahlada — the Daitya and Kaladeva, both were shooting arrows like the pouring of the rain. The bows of both of them resembled the rainbow. The armlets worn by them were glittering like the lightening.

Both of them were seated over the elephant and the chariot, both the warriors appeared like the huge clouds. Both of them were filled with rage against each other and looked glamorous like the clouds with water

The kavacas and the divine garlands worn by them were of molten gold. Both the great warriors appeared like the sun and the fire.

They had the gigentic bodies resembling the mountains, stood at the start of their respective armies and shot unbearable Indra's vajra like arrows at each other.

The invincible war of both of them, who were engaged in the battle with each other, was losing all hope of survival.

All of limbs of their body had been wounded with the arrows. All their kiths and kins had also been killed in the war. The chests of the prominent warriors had been soaked in blood several of the soldiers had been killed in this condition.

The dead bodies of the warriors, who had been killed, or those who were falling or further those who were being fallen, covered the entire earth.

The time taken in the picking up of the arrows, placing them over the bows, could not be found by anyone.

Both the warriors, were valorous having long arms, and well-versed in the war. With the enthusiasm, they turned their bow circular by stretching them.

Kaladeva having been hurt with the arrows of Prahlada, the army of Kaladeva fled away in panic, excatly in the same way as a number of clouds are shattered with the force of the wind.

Finding that the pride of Kaladeva was shattered in the war, Prahlada the great asura took him as defeated and started destroying the other soldiers of the gods.

The war fought between Kaladeva and Prahlada was never fought earlier, nor shall it be fought in future.

Thus Prahlada, possessing enormous prowess, even after getting wounded in the war, became victorious, while Kaladeva fled away from the battle field.

Here ends chapter — 59, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Purana a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the battles between Vrsaparva and Niskumbha, besides Prahlada and Kaladeva. (Vrs. 1-103, P.T. = 12/40)
