Hidimba killed by Balabhadra

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, inspite of their being pretty old, both Vasudeva and Ugrasena, felt quite comfortable while waging the war. All their limbs had been worn out due to old age with wrinkles appearing over the entire body and the hair of the head had grown gray.

They were well versed in knowledge and the duties of a Ksatriyas. Both of them started fighting with the Raksasas Hidimba- the evil soul.

Both of them tortured the man-eating and evil Hidimba with the shooting of the thousands of arrows.

The Raksasas king Hidimba had been well built in the body by eating the human. His arms were long and his chin was quite vast. He was extremely wicked. He had a protruding belly and horrible eyes. The hair of his head was of tawny colour and had the deformed eyes. His nose resembled the beak of the white kite. He had terrific and vast arms. He had the raised hair over the body.

He had a gigantic body like the mountain. His fangs were quite big and his face resembled that of a Jackal. The said Raksasas with a protruding body appeared to be ready to swallow the entire world.

He had high shoulders, the wide neck, which was quite long as well. He appeared like an elephant. He ate flesh, equal to a full box and drank blood which was collected in the pitchers.

He made the elephants to fight with elephants, horses with horses, chariots with chariots besides the foot soldiers with foot soldiers, trampling them at the same time.

Finding the humans before him he inhaled them through the nostrils. The man eater Hidimba, killing some warriors of Vrsni race ate them up suddenly. The horrible Raksas, killed every one who so ever, was found by him.

The man eating Raksas Hidimba, ate up several of the Yadava and Vrsni warriors, while some of them were thrown away by him at long distance.

As the enrged Rudra kills the living beings at the time of dissolution, similarly, the Raksasas ate away all of them in a moment.

Some of the valorous warriors of Vrsni race, getting frightened, fled to different directions, while several of them were eaten up by the Raksasa.

О king, as Kumbhakarna had eaten up the monkeys, similarly the man eating demon, almost finished the army of the Vrsni race.

In the mean time, the aged gems of the Yadu race known as Vasudeva and Ugrasena, held the awful bows in their hands, stood before Raksasas as if two deer stood before a horrible lion.

The huge Raksasa rushed with his open mouth in order to swallow them as well. He had terrific eyes. With his wide open mouth, he looked like Patala.

О Naresvara, then the Raksasa chewing the bodies of the humans, rushed towords both of them. Then both of them, shot innumerable arrows, speedily, which filled the mouth of the Raksasa, who appeared like Yama — the god of death.

The Raksasa, then removed all the arrows from his mouth and again rushed with his open mouth.

He snatched away the bows of both of them and broke them in the battle ground itself. Then the wicked Raksasa with an awful mouth, spreading both his arms, tried to capture aged king Vasudeva. He was considered as the best of the Raksasas.

Hidimba said — "O Ugrasena, what for are you standing before me? I shall just now eat up both of you. I shall eat up Vasudeva as well.

Come on you enter my mouth. Both of you are the food for me. The destiny who has made you the father of Shri Krishna, the old Vasudeva is hungry. He feels painful with labour and displays his prowess quickly in the battle ground. Now both of you cannot escape from my mouth. Therefore you atonce enter my mouth.

I shall feel satisfied and contented by drinking you blood. Thereafter, I shall eat up the flesh of old people like you with comfort".

Thus speaking, the Raksasa with a huge chin, known as Hidimba, rushed towards them with his open mouth.

The unarmed Vasudeva and Ugrasena, the best among the people of the race of the Vrsni, getting frightened rushed to different directions.

In the mean time, the glorious Balabhadra, spotted boty Vasudeva and Ugrasean in precarious condition. Then he entrusted Shri Krishna to face Haiiisa and he atonce appeared before the Raksasa and said.

"О Raksasa, donot display such a misadventure. Leave both the kings, I am standing here. I am Balabhadra and have arrived here to fight with the enemy. You better fight with me. I alone can kill you. What is your dreadful sight'.

Listening the words so spoken by Haladhara, Hidmiba released, both Vasudeva and Ugrasena and thought, "He is immensely wicked. Therefore I should eat him up first". Thus thinking, again opening his mouth, as before, he pournced upon Balabhadra.

The valorous Balabhadra discarding the bow and arrow, he patted his excellent arm and stood before the demon, with a climched fist.

The wicked Hidimba, like Yama — with an open mouth, climched a terrific fist and attacked over the chest of Balarama.

With the striking of the Raksasa's fist, Balabhadra was enraged. Then he also administred a fist at the Raksasa king.

Then the fight with fist between the human and the Raksasa continued. While fighting in the battle ground Balabhadra - the man lion, and Hidimba — the Raksasa lion, fought vigorously, issuing cracking sound of the Arts.

Thereafter Hidimba — the king of Raksasas again administered a powerful fist over the chest of Balarama, as if Indra had attacked a mountain with vajra.

Thereafter Balarama, clinched the firt tightly, forcefully struck over the chest of Hidimba, the enemy of gods. Thereafter, he slapped the face of the demon twice.

With the administering of slaps by Balabhadra, the Raksasa almost became lifeless. Then he kneeling down, fell on the ground.

Then Balarama took a jump and caught the demon with both his hands and rotated him step by step. In this way Balarama, displaying his strength, rotated him in a circular way for long. Thereafter, in full view of all the people, lifted up the demon and threw him away at a distance of two kosas (four miles). In this way the demon Hidimba was thrown away it a distance after he was dead.

(It may be recalled that the demon Hidimba, who was killed by Bhima the Pandava here before his entry into the city of Epacakra, was a different demon, but had the similar name). In the great war, such of the Raksasas who had escaped death, fled away to the ten directions, getting terrified from Balarama.

Thereafter, the sun — with thousand rays, wound up his rays and moved towards the Astacala (the mountain of setting sun) and the eyes of the people were some what filled with darkness.

О excellent Janamejaya, the sun god, who is the face of the universe, preserver of the universe, besides being the preceptor of the world, entered the oceanic water, after which the moon rose who was the lord of constellations, by which the darkness of evening was also removed.

О Janamejaya, at that point of time all the excellent rulers in the army of Hamsa, became disintereted in the war, saying, "Tomorrow's war if fought over the Govardhana mountain, it would be better, where echo of the songs of kinnaras. (Thus speaking, all the rulers reached the mountain-Govardhana).

Here ends chapter — 128, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the killing of Hidimba by Balabhadra. (Vrs. 1-47, P.T. = 14,584)
