Method of recital of Harivamsa and its reward





Vaishampayana said — О king, I shall now speak out to you the method of the recital of Harivamsa for nine days. This method is used with the help of a number of helpers for meeting success.

First of all, an astrologer should be summoned, making all the efforts and the mahurta (auspicious time) for the recital’s start should be enquired of him. Then the wealth equivalent to the performing of a marriage should be collected, for the purpose.

The recital, should be done in the months of Bhadra, Asvin, Kartika, Marga Sirsa Asadha, and Sravana. These are the six months for the recital of Harivamsa for the listeners.

Only such people should be associated with this work who are quite enthusiastic. Then the message about the start of the recital should be sent to other countries and the people should be invited with families.

The detached Vaisnavas from different places, who would be anxious for participation in the recital should be surely invited. The letter of invitation should be drafted thus. "O Gentlemen, there would be an opportunity for the recital (of for nine day in which the people of nobility would assemble. It would be an auspicious occansion for the assembly of the religious minded people, which is difficult to be achieved by all. (Therefore, all of you should arrive to drink the nectar of the recital of Harivamsa.

The people, who so arrive, appropriate arrangement for their boarding and lodging should be made. The listening to the recital is considered to be quite beneficial at a holy place, in a forest, or at the residence (of the organisr).

The place of audience should be quite spacious. The land should be purified, plastered with different colours.

All the household articles should be collected and stored in a corner. A high platform should be built for the recital of the Purana, which should be decorated with pillars of the banana leaves.

It should be decorated with canopies, flowers, fruits and tender shoots. The banners should be installed on all the four sides. The mandapa should be further decorated with a gate.

At some height of the mandapa seven lokas should be lodged and the detached Brahmanas should be convened to take their seated in each one of them. Similarly, the seven lokas should be conceived under the mandapa and the ordinary people should be made to be seated there.

Initially arrangements for the excellent seats should be made for the Brahmanas. Thereafter an excellent seat should also be made available for the speaker.

When the reciter while seated faces north, then the listeners should face east. In case the reciter is seated facing east, then the listeners should be seated facing north.

The detached devotee of Visnu, well versed in the Vedas and other literature, being a Brahmana, should quote several stories during his speech, and should be able to bring home to the people the inherent idea, of the verses, besides being patient, merciful, such a person should be made to act as a reciter.

Such of the people, who are well versed in the Vedas, Vedanta, beside their perceptors, they achieve quick success.

A preceptor who possesses ordinary wisdom, like other people, and in case such people (of low intelligence) advise or discourse others, what type of success could be achieved by them?

Such of the people who get confused by following various seats, are womanissers, and talk in deceitful ways, such types of persons, inspite of their being learned, they should not be entrusted the task of performing religious recitation. They should be kept at a distance from such divine activities.

There should be another reciter of an equal capability, in order to help the original orator. Such a Brahmana should also be able to remove the doubts and should be well-versed in convincing the people.

It is incumbent on the reciter to get himself shaved a day before, the start of the recital, so as to complete the vrata (without disturbance) completely. When the moon- balas of the reciter as well as the listeners are equally placed, and the planets and stars of the listening couples are also favourable, only then the recital should be started.

The listener should get up two ghadis earlier to the sun rise and getting free from the daily routine, should take his bath appropriately. Controlling his mind, daily, should perform the sandhya-vandana in brief, washing his feet and hands, well, should make the Brahmanas to perform the svasti-vacana (welfare recital). Then he should create the sarvatobhadra — mandala over the ground, plastured with the cow- dung. Then he should perform the adoration according to his own means. Then the lord Ganapati should be worshipped for the removal of the obstructions in the recital.

Thereafter, lord Krishna, the cowherd, with Laksmi should be worshipped.

Thereafter, Sankalpa should be offered in the following manner Then recalling the country and the age, the performer

should say:- I belong to..... gotra,....

pravara and my name is....., (I belong to).....caste, for the destruction of all the sins with my wife during the last mnay births, and for the removal of the sufferings therefrom, for getting progeny in this birth, and for the increase of the life of my children to a hundred years, with this desire, for the achievement of all the pleasures to self, with this desire, and for the purification of the body during the present birth, and in the next birth, crossing the abodes of Indra and other gods, for the sake of the devotion of lord Visnu, arrival in Visnuloka and for dwelling there for a kalpa, and ultimately achieving the form of the lord, both of us (the couple) as the performers of the yajna, we shall listen to the recital of Shri Harivamsa. In case either the husband or the wife listening to Harivamsa, then he/she should say that I shall perform, the vrata. Thus reciting the samkalpa, the reciter, who should be well- versed in the Vedas and other scripture should be designated as the reciter of the recital.

He should then be given a gold ring, gold ear ornaments, a dhoti, a sheet, a turban, sixteen palas of gold, flowers, betels, betel-nut, and unbroken rice with spotless mind. By giving those articles in charity, the following Sankalpa should be uttered.

(1) "Today at this.... place, (name of the country, the yajaman should utter, "The couple is of..... gotra,.....and is giving to

... (the name of the Brahmana, the sandal paste, betel leaves, gold, costumes and other articles, as gifts, for the sake of listening to the Harivamsa's recital from said Brahman. Who is being selected. (2) The reciter should say, "I have beenselected". After his speaking these words, the performer, receiver diksa for with diksa (initiation) he receives daksina and by daksina he receives faith. With the faith he achieves truth. With the receiving of this mantra, the string should be tied over the right wrist of the reciter. The orator Brahmana should also have the binding of the sacred strings from the other listeners as well.

Thereafter the book of Harivarhsa Parana should be worshipped making the sixteen types of offering like several pasts, costumes, flowers, unbroken rice, gold ornaments, betel nuts, fruits of the season, etc. which is quite essential.

By worshipping the Bramanas, the listening of Harivarhsa is considered to be much more rewarding. Therefore making all the efforts, one should listen to the same.

Thereafter all the listeners should offer this salutation to Vyasa. The yajamana at that point of time should recite this, mantras, "o lord Vyasa, you are enlightened on all the Sastras, are the form of Brahma, Visnu and Siva. О son of Satyavatl, О lord Vyasa, salutation to you.

Thus offering their salutation to Vyasa, seated over the auspicious and purified place, the recital should be offered, seated over the seat of kusa.

A person desirous of earning merit, for him, a person well versed in Purana would be adorable irrespective of his being aged, pauper, weak or young.

The one, by whom the words uttered from whose mouth are wish fulfilling like the Kamadhenu cow, such a reciter of the Purana should not at all be looked down upon, by the learned people.

A person well learned in the Purana happens to be the preceptor of all for his educating the people on virtues.

By taking birth in crores of times, the jivas suffer enormously, (to them, the reciter) bestows virtues, with the reciting of the auspicious stories. Who else could be a better preceptor then him?

The one who is well versed in the Puranas, pure, having controlled the senses, tranquil, devoid of jealousy, noble hearted, compassionate, such a learned reciter, should recite the story of Purana.

When the reciter well versed in the Purana, occupies the seat of Vyasa, then he should not offer his salutation to anyone else.

The people who are deceitful, wicked or those who arrive with the intention of defeating the reciter, the reciter should not continue the narration in their presence.

The place which is full of the wicked people, besides the Siidras, and the wild animals, or the inauspicious places, the auspicious recital of the Puranas should not be made there.

The auspicious recital should be made in the village inhabited by the noble people, in the excellent regions, in the temples of gods, over the banks of the rivese, the learned reciter, should recite the auspicious story of Puranas.

O king, listening to the auspicious story from such a reciter a person achieves the desired reward. Harivamsa bestows welfare in this as well as the other world, is auspicious and bestows the desired reward, and the sons. It bestows success and removes the sins.

A person, who having controlled his senses should take refuge with Harivamsa for getting a son. This Purana bestows, merits and removes the sins, should be listened by the people with faith and devotion, besides being attentive.
