Chapter 133

Story of killing of Tripura

Janamejaya said — О Brahman, there were the three cities of the Daityas floating in the sky which were destroyed by the three eyed Siva, how did he do so? I would like to listen to the episode, correctly.

Vaishampayana said — О king, you have enquired as to how, the Daityas, who were inimical to the mankind, were killed at the hands of the three eyed Siva? You listen to the related episode in detail. In earlier times, lord Siva, had killed the asura kings, who were desirous of killing the human race, with the tridents, which went straight.

О lion among the humans, all the three cities were made of precious metals. They used to float in the sky like the clouds.

They were built with vast and resplendent boundary walls, which used to shine with gems, and had the gates decorated with precious gems. All the three cities floated in the sky. They were resplendent with their own lustre. The terrific cities were created with power of tapas. The terrific cities looked like the cities of Gandharvas.

The winged horses, getting proud of their strenght, having the lustre greator than that of the sun, drove then according to their will.

Using their entire strength, when the horses neighed, and galloped, at that point of time the sky looked as having been hurt with their hoofs.

Only the great Maharsis, who had burnt out all their sins with their tapas, who were illustrious like the fire, who had attained self realisation, were able to visualise those asuras with their eyes. It appeared as if they could swallow the entire sky, with their wind like speed.

The festivitions of music and dance were celebrated in those cities. They appeared like Gandharvas. The large number of high buildings made of the molten gold, which were filled with all types of weapons, and decorated with various ornaments, which resembled the buildings of Indra, added to the grandeur of these cities.

Like the peak of the Kailasa mountain, the high palaces, were built in those cities, looked graceful like many suns.

The city looked quite graceful, with buildings with high canopies which used to shine like the molten gold, the city of the Daityas, looked quite graceful.

The cities were filled with tumultuous and thundering sound. The city echoed with the lion's roars of the warriors. It looked like the caitra ratha forest being filled with the pleasent looking men and woment.

It had high flags and shining swords in the Tripura city, which appeared like the lightening in the sky.

О Bharata, the valorous Danavas, including the Daitya kings, Suranabha, Candranabha, lived in the city, who were proud of their prowess.

О Bharata, all of them getting confused with pride, they started the paths of Devayana and Pitryana, built by Brahma.

О lion among the humans, О foremost of the race of Bharata, thus holding the bow in their hands, the excellent asuras and Danavas, when usurped the routes of Devayana and Pitryana then all the gods rushed to Brahma. They had fallen faces. They felt painful with the obstruction caused on both the routes by the Danavas.

All of them standing before Brahma, spoke in pathetic voice, "O Grand sire, the bestower of the share to the gods, the enemies are causing pain to us, the enemies are usurping our share of yajnas beating us at the same time.

O best among the orators, you speak out some remedy for the destruction of the Daityas, by which the gods could be able to defeat the asuras".

Thereafter, Brahma — the giver of bows said to the gods, ’You listen to the best way for taking revenge against the enemies. All the Daityas are invincible from all others, except the eternal lord Siva.

О son of Bharata. The gods accepted the words of Brahma, from his mouth, and reached the earth with the Rudraganas.

All of them engaged themselves in tapas in the valley of the Meru mountain, in the middle of the earth and started reciting Pranava, took refuge with, Нага, the son of Kasyapa.

For them the damsels could not attract them. They spreading the mat of kusa they slept on it, The copper and iron were their ornaments.

О best of the race of Kuru, the skins of black buks who had died the natural death, which were extracted from their bodies. These skins, were quite soft, besides the skins of tigers served as their costumes.

Wearing the tiger skins, concealing themselves from the illusion {maya), all the gods, taking refuge in the sky way, reached the abode of lord Siva. Offering their salutation to them, they spoke to him.

They said, "O lord, you have turned your face from us. Therefore, as the offerings made to the fire covered with ashes by ignorance, becomes infructuous, similarly the boon granted to us has become useless. Therefore, the words spoken by Brahma, in presence of the gods moving in the sky, should be honoured by you".

When so addressed by the gods, besides getting inspired of the future activity, Mahadeva got ready decorating a kavaca over his body.

All of them wearing the ornaments and kavacas, shone like the gold. They took refuge in the solar path, appeared like the fire in flame. They started reducing to ashes their enemies with the lustre possessed by them. They appeared as high as the mountains.

All the gods and the Psis desirous of the killing of the Danavas, could take to any form at will. All of them got ready wearing kavacas over their universal bodies.

The three eyed lord Siva, who was surrounded by gods besides Kubera, on all the sides, holding the bow and arrow in his hands started fighting with the people of Tripura.

As the people who climb over the tops of the balconies, similarly the Daityas of Tripura, with their tom out bodies, met with their end, getting shattered started falling from the cities (over the ground) like fall of the mountains.

О Naresvara, the Daityas who had arrived in the battle field, were badly wounded and shattered, like the mountains shattered with striking of vajra.

The bodies of the Daityas, were tom out with the use of swords, Saktis, cakras, battle axes, besides the arrows. All of them fell down on the ground, like the mountains without wings.

Getting burnt with the ever increasing lustre of the gods, the Daityas lost their consciousness. In this way both the gods and the Daityas attacking each other in the battle of destruction, started getting reduced. Inspite of the demons possesing the divine sight, the Daityas could not spot the gods.

At the time of sun-set, in the evening time, the faces of the gods had been injured (with the attack of the Daityas) who also fell on earth.

During the night, the Daityas become victorious with the use of their sharp arrows, uttered aloud the lion's roar and kept on thundering together. They created tumultuous noise.

Getting enthusiastic with victory, the asuras started talking among themselves. "All the gods, who were desirous of victory, have been frightened by we - the valorous Daityas used prasas, swords and tomaras.

The Daityas having been invigorated with the havisya provided by Sukracaiya, looked graceful in war with their weapons.

Then the Daityas, having been filled with arrogance, were reduced to ashes, by lord Siva, with the issue of his own lustre.

As at the time of the arrival of dissolution, the sun with rays, starts burning the people, and on the arrival of devastation, lord Rudra, the master of bhiitas, destroys all the bhUtas, similarly, he started destroying all the Daityas.

The chariot which was driven by the horses which galloped with speed of mind, reached the centre of the sky, became resplendent like the cloud with lightning.

The chariot, which could be identified with flag embossed with the figure of a bull, looked graceful like the cloud with rainbow.

Thereafter, the Siddhas, on their arrival in the sky, eulogised the three eyed lord Siva having the bull bannered flag in the chariot, recalling his earlier performance.

The truthful Rishis, who had achieved peace by means of their performance severe tapas, the gods who consumed the nectar, the gods and the Gandharvas, besides the apsaras, also sang in praise of lord Siva. О Naresvara, the second place relating to the Pitrs and the gods with pleasent faces was immensely delighted.

Thereafter hundreds of fire works were shot from the boundary walls and the canopies. The Daityas the enemies of gods, who were awful for all and stood in the centre of the Daitya city. Thereafter, the sharp and terrific arrows were shot from both the sides.

О Bharata, the Danavas who were well- versed in war fare, fought using the fire works, spears, and the tridents, displaying great prowess.

Sky broke, clubs with clubs, spears with spears, weapons with weapons, and the illusions with illusions.

Thereafter the other Daityas shot thousands of arrows, Saktis, battle-axes, and terrific swords at the gods.

The gods getting hurt with swords, showering of arrows, stood at the death's door. The chariot of Mahadeva, resembling the city of Gandharvas, also had to face an ugly situation with them.

The gods, having been wounded with the Prasas, swords, arrows and tomaras, who could bear the load of the Daityas, feeling painful with the striking of enormous weapons, Indra — the husband of Saci, stood there (non-plussed).

O Lord of the land, O son of the race of Bharata, "In the mean time the speech of the Rishis who happen to be the sons of Brahma, appeared there.

It declared, "The £hariot of lord Siva is getting descended on earth and is going to be established there. It is invisible and has become fit to be overpowered in full view of all the lokas.

O lord of the land, with the fall of Siva's chariot which was the best on earth, all the living beings recalled on earth.

The mountain peaks started shaking. Huge trees also started shaking. The ocean was in turmoil and all the ten directions were deprived of the grace.

All the ages Brahmanas started reciting the excellent mantra. The lustre, which is like Brahman for all the people desirous of victory, bestows peace to all the living beings on this earth as well as the other world.

О Bharata, thereafter, Visnu — the lustreful great yogi, casting his glance on all the side, himself concentrating his mind, taking refuge with Dharma — the form of bull, with the reciting of the Sama-gana, raised up the chariot of Mahddeva. At that point of time lord Visnu, by the grace of the three eyed lord Siva, who can take to any form at will, strongest of all the gods, and was illumining with the lustre of the fois, who perform tapas, in the deserted and lonely forest.

Shri Hari, carried the chariot in which all the powerful gods were seated, lifted it with his horns, started thundering like the churning of the ocean.

Lord Visnu who had taken to the form of a bull, reached like the the third part of the wind started thundering aloud like the ocean of the full moon.

Getting frightened with the thundering sound, the valorous Daityas, again started fighting, wearing the Kavacas.

All of them were quite strong and valorous. All of them started destroying the army of gods carrying the bows.

Thereafter the eternal Siva, placed a winged fire like sharp arrow and then attacked it with Brahmastra. Thereafter the Brahmadanda was shot at the city of Daitya known as Tripura.

О son of Bharata’s race, lord Siva, mentally concetrated the weapon with truth Brahmayuga besides his own tapas, in three parts, shot it at the Daitya, which could kill one and all the Daityas. The arrow was shining with flames, besides being spotless like the gold.

After shooting, the horrible arrows, which were poisonous like serpents, the arrows with flames of fire, tore out the entire city of the Daityas.

О son of Bharata, О king, with the strike of the arrows, the main gates started burning like the peaks of the Vindhya mountain. All the three cities were burnt to ashes, getting scattered.

О Bharata, О lord of the land, all the three cities, with the fire burning in them were raized to the ground.

О Naresvara, like the mountain peaks, the cities of lapiz lazuli, were reduced to ashes with Brahmastra and were razed to the ground.

With the destruction of Tripura, the gods uttered these words in delight, "O Parusottama, you please destroy the enemies, who are increase.

In this waty lord Visnu, possessing the strength of yogic practices, who smiled as a Mahdyogl He was then eulogised by lord Siva as well as Brahma and other gods.
