Chapter 135

The Glory of Harivamsa

Janamejaya said — "0 best of the ascetics, now you tell me, what is the reward for listening to the Harivamsa Purana and what should be given in charity at the time of the completion of the recitation"?

Vaishampayana said — О Best of the race of Bharata, after listening to the Harivamsa Purana all the sins earned with the body, speech, and the mind, are destroyed, in the same way as the darkness disappears at the rise of the sun.

The merit one achieves, by listening to the recital of the eighteen Puranas, the same merit is achieved by a devotee of Visnu by the hearing of the recital of Harivamsa.

A person, who listens with devotion a single verse of Harivamsa or half or a quarter of it, he surely proceeds to the abode of lord Visnu.

О king, in the age of Kali, taking refuge in Jambudvipa, the number of the listeners of the Purana would decline and would be even rare, My words thus spoken are true. The ladies desirous of having a son, must listen to this Purana.

A person who is desirous of achieving the reward as prescribed in the scriptures, the listener should give away daksina to the orator or reciter as per his means, or three niskas of gold.

For the sake of one’s own welfare, he should give away to the reciter, the costumes, and a white cow with calf, with her horns decorated with gold.

О best of Bharata’s race, he jhould also be given ornaments for both his hands, besides the ear-rings for the ears. In addition to this a palanquin should also be given to him.

О Naresvara, the land should also be given to the reciter, because, there is no other charity comparable to the charity of land.

A person who listens or recites Harivamsa, he getting relieved of all the sins, proceeds to the abode of lord Visnu.

O best of Bharata's race, by so doing, he redeems his manes of the past eleven generations, together with his son, his wife and himself.

О Naresvara, the listener should perform homa equivalent to one tenth of its verses.

With the mere mention of its name, a person is relieved of all the sins, by listening to it, the childless person gets a son, and a pauper achieves the riches.

A person who achieves the merit of Asvamedha or Naramedha yajha, Shri Hari bestows on him the same merit, by his listening to this Purana.

The sins like brahmahatya killing of foetus, killing of the cow, drinking of wine, sex with the preceptor's wife, are washed out if a person attentively listens to this Purana. There is nothing to be thought otherwise in this respect.

I have narrated to you the enormous glory of Shri Krishna. The one who listens to it or reads it, he achieves the excellent reward during this world.

Here ends chapter — 135, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the glory of Harivamsa. (Vrs. 1-17, P.T. = 14,925)
