Rules for the performing of Navanha parayana etc

Vaishampayana said — О best of the rules which are required for a person taking to the vrata for Navanha — рагйуапа are being explained by me. You listen to the same. The person performing the vrata should take one time meals and should sleep on the floor.

Till the completion of the recital of the book, he should observe Brahmacarya. At the completion of each and every parana of Harivamsa the payasama should be used as the food. This has been prescribed.

Light food is recommended to keep control over urinating and stools. Therefore, the people desirous of listening to the recital of Harivamsa, should take havisya food alone. In case one has the strength, he should fast on nine nights and listen to the recital. Or alternatively he should consume ghee or milk and then listen to the recital. In case he is unable to manage with it, he should consume fruit or take food once in a day and then listen to the recital.

The underlying idea is that anyone, who could perform a perticular rule, conveniently he should perform it in the same manner. I infact consider taking of food better than fasting in case it helps in listening to the recital.

In case of an obstruction in the recital it is considered to be good. Who so ever intends to listen to the recital, he should do so with a concentrated mind.

A listener should take bath in the morning and evening, should initially worship Shri Krishna, thereafter he should listen to the Purana.

A listener, who is desirous of a particular reward, should first serve his preceptor with devotion offering flowers, incense, fruit, and excellent naivedya.

After listening to the recital, as per his own desire, he should clean himself appropriately. Then he should appear for service with his near and dear ones. Then pleasing his preceptor, he should go to his abode with his wife, should sleep separately. For the removal of sins, he should observe the rules for cleanliness, patience, and Brahmacarya quite strictly, devoting his mind to lord Visnu. He should observe the above rules.

A person who takes vrata for listening to the recital, should remain neat and clean at heart and then listen to the recital. He should take food daily over the leaf plate.

For the duration of the recital, the pulses, honey, oil, heavy food, the things which are polluted at sight, and stale food should be discarded daily.

The brinjals, watermelon, the burnt food, beans and the meat sould be discarded in food by a person who had taken the vrata for listening to the recital.

The onions, garlic, asafoctida, carrot, radish, fragrant root, palate and pumpkins, should be discarded by the people who listen to the recital of Harivarhsa.

The listener of the recital should free himself from possions, pride, arrogance, jealosy, greed, cheating, confusion, and envy, from his mind.

He should totally stop the denouncing of Vedas, Vaisnavas, Brahamanas, preceptors, attendant of the cow pen or cowherds, ladies, the king and the great or noble people.

One who takes the Vrata for the listening to the recital of Harivarhsa, he should be truthful, pure, merciful, silent, simple and humble. He should be benevolent in his mind.

The one, who getting overpowered with devotion and faith, without getting desirous of anything else, listens to the recital with purity silence, and in a peaceful manner, he earns great merit.

A degraded person, getting deprived of devotion, listens to the recital, he can never earn merit and he has to suffer, birth after birth.

A person who offering betel and other presents, worships the Purana, and listens to its recital with devotion, they do not have to face poverty and serasety.

A person, who leaves the recital halfway, all his pleasures and the wife are lost in between (He is unble to enjoy them fully).

When a sinful and a degraded person, listens to the recital with his head covered with turban, he is born as a crane bird.

Such of the people who listen to the Puranic recital, while chewing the betel, they are thrown in the bell, where they have to eat their own refuse. Their faces are turned like the vagina of a woman in period.

The deceitful persons who listen to a recital seated over a high seat, they after suffering in the hell for long, ultimately are born as crows.

A person who listens to the Parana seated in vlrasana or in lying position, they are turned into the Arjuna tree.

Those who listen to the recital, without offering salutation to the holy book, they are born as the poisnous trees. Those who listen it while sleeping they are born as pythons.

A person of rude temperament if listens to the recital seated over a seat as high as he reciter, he earns the sin like the one of cohabiting with the wife of the preceptor.

Those who denounce the auspicious Paranic stories, or those of the reciters, they are born as dogs for a hundred births.

Such of the people who enter into useless controvercies during the reaction, they are initially born as donkeys then they are born as chemeleons.

Those who never listen to the auspicious recital of the Puranas, they badly suffering in the hell are born as the wild boars.

Such of the degraded people who create obstrctions in the recital of the Puranas, they suffering the pains in the hell for crores of years, then are born as the village pigs.

While listening to the recital one should not engage himself in talk and in case one does so he is sure to fall in the hell. One should not extend love and affection to the children, while listening to the recital.

While the recital is on, one should not cast jovical remarks and also should not talk to his own wife. These instructions should be stricktly followed, because the talk during the recital causes obstruction in the same.

О Lion of the kings, by creating obstmction in the recital, the person who does so, earns the sin of brahmahatya.

Irrespective of being a man or a woman, one should have no talk during the recital and he should make all the efforts in this regard. In case anyone does so, he is sure to fall in the hell.

О excellent one, in this connection, I am going to relate an ancient story, listening to which no one would talk during the recital.

In ancient times, there lived a Brahmana in Janasthana (habitation). He was quite a learned one, well versed in the Vedas and dharma-Sastras, possessing good conduct.

He daily, had the bath in the Ganga, and performed the SandhyapUjana etc. adorned the gods and he engaged himself in listening to the recital of religious scripture.

He had a wicked and crooked wife. She was always quarrelsome. She was past master in falsehood and always engaged in back biting others.

The sinful woman, started collecting riches stealthily. She herself purchased curd, milk, sugarcane bells, ghee, and the butter and consumed then all in a lonely place. She gave her husband, dry food for eating.

She was a prejudced woman and her mind was filled with wickedness. She always denounced her husband, besides being sinful. She usually was seated in the houses of others.

She never, had a pleasent talk. She always wished well of those, who were inimical to her husband, she was never judicious in serving food. She served something to some people and something to others. Her words was very harsh when she spoke.

She was alwyas inimical to guests, and spoilt the religious ways. Her husband was quite noble, besides being virtuous and gentle, who was honoured everywhere.

Her husband used to sit daily for the listening of the recital of Purana then she used to go there to denounce him.

She used to say, "Having been born in the world, getting least interest in earning of livelihood, becoming lethargic, you are seated here listening to the recital like a recluse. You have become Vyasadeva, but you tell me, what should I do?

The children trouble me for food, daily. You tell me, what should I do for them?

I have not the least cereal in my house, nor costumes nor the wealth. What should I do? Where should I go?

I know not how the wicked destiny, wrote my fortunes like this? The wicked Brahma has given me a husband who is utterly foolish, lethargic, a pauper, and heartless. He is least attached to his family. He is always engaged in listening to the recital of the Pur anas.

I happen to be the only unfortunate woman in the world, having arrived in the house of a pariper like him. After my arrival, I never had food to my full.

Only such of the women are fortunate in the world whose husbands are industrious, wealthy and having all the fortunes with them.

They obey the command of their wives, are engaged in bringing up their children, away stay at home, and please their wives.

They remain healthy by having excellent food, obey the command of their wives, and act accordingly.

This husband of mine is a fool and devoid of wisdom. He neglects the house hold. There is no salt or oil in the house today, nor is there the fire wood.

There is no vegetable in my house, nor are there the cereals available. What should I do? My husband is quite a lazy person".

Inspite of all the essentials like cereals being available in the house, she used to come daily and uttered the falsehood there.

The crooked woman used to create obstruction in the recital. Her heart was filled with wickedness. In due course of time, she met with her death.

The messengers of Yama bound her and carried her to the abode of yama. At the command of Yama, they threw her in the hell.

Falling from the heaven, she, because of her earlier sins, was born as a demoness in a forest, where there was shortage of water. She suffered there because of food and water.

Therefore, irrespective of being a man or a woman, one should not create obstruction in the recital of the story of Hari. I am speaking the truth to you.

There are fourteen types of good and bad listeners. They are known by the names of mind (fish) bhramara (black vuspa), mahisa (buffalo), hariisa (swan), margara (cat), Vaka (crow), vrka (jackal or a crow), капка (eagle), jonk (leech), pot with hole, water, ocean and rock. The people who have their nature like each one of the else, are known by the same name.

The pauper, one suffering from consumption, or anyother disease, the unfortunate one, the sinful one, an useless persons, the researcher should listen to the Harivamsa.

A woman having stopped her menses, who had no issue other than the one son or daughter, a barren lady, a lady whose children die soon after their birth, or those who faced frequent abortious, such ladies should listen to the Purana making all the efforts.

О king, a woman after listening to his story, achieves an excellent son. This has been ordained by the sage Vyasa. With the listening to the story of Shri Hari, all the desires of a person are fulfilled.

Here ends chapter — 4, of the glory of Harivamsa. (Vrs. 1-68, P.T. = 15,081)
