Navahna-parajana of Harivamsa

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, this with the appropriate completion of vrata, its concluding ceremony should be performed. A person desirous of excellent result, should perform the conclusion ceremony like the vrata performed for the Janmastami or the birthday of lord Shri Krishna.

Such of the devotees who happen to be poor, the concluding ceremony is not binding on them. They infact get purified with the listening of the recital of the Purana, because of their being the Vaisnavas, devoid of the desires.

Thus at the completion of Navanha- yajha, the reciter should be adored with the book, with devotion. On the other hand it is uncumbent on the reciter to distribute prasada as well as the rosaries of the holy basil.

Then playing on the cymbal, the kvrtana should be performed with musical tones, besides raising the slogans of victory as well as offering the salutation. The conches should be blown. The food and riches should be distributed among the Brahmanas as well as the beggars.

After the listening of the recital, image of Laksmi-Narayana, weighing a pada, decorated with a Shrivatsa mark, should be given to the reciter of the Purana. At the end of the recital, the silken costumes should be given to the reciter of the Purana.

This is the special provision which has been ordained by the Brahmanas well- versed in the tattvas that at the end of the recital the silken costumes should be appropriately given.

The reciter who is well-versed in the Sanuhita- literature, getting purified, after reciting the entire Harivamsa, on an auspicious day, should be consecrated over a lion throne, covered with a silken cloth, and he himself should be clad in white costumes, getting purified, should worship the book, in an appropriate manner. At that point of time he should have a clear and concentrated mind. The adoration should be concluded by distributing eatables, and fried dishes, as naivedyas.

The performer or the yajaman should give away the gold and other articles, as daksina. Such of the people, who making arrangement for the recital of the Purana, provide an opportunity to others to hear the soul, they are lodged in the Brahmadharma for crores of kalpas.

The person who gives to the reciter of the Purana, a blanket for the purpose of seating, deer-skin, cloth, bed, or a pedestal, etc. he on his arrival in the heaven enjoying all the pleasures resides in Brahmaloka and other auspicious places. He ultimately achieves Vaikuntha.

Those who give new cotton cloth for the covering of the Purana, they gain knowledge and enjoy all the pleasures in all the future births.

Those who are extremely sinful, and troublemakers, they can also achieve salvation, by listening to this Purana.

A person, who after writing Harivariisa, gives it away to the reciter, he earns the merit of giving away land in charity.

О Naresvara, a person who has heard the entire Harivamsa you take it that he has performed the Rajasuya and Asvamedha sacrifices. Therefore he should give away the due amount of daksina.

The Rajasuya and Asvamedha sacrifices reward in their respctive yogas, but the listening to the recital of Harivamsa, yields reward of all the yajnas in the age of kali.

The people who are believrs, devoted having controlled their senses, at the start of the Harivamsa Purana, all their sins start trembling and all the obstructions get destroyed.

О Naresvara, a person who leads the recital of Harivamsa from beginning to end, then one should believe, that by a look, or a touch with such a person, one gets merit equal to meeting lord Visnu himself.

On the completion of the recital of Harivamsa, the sins of past three births of the listener are surely destroyed and he gets his desires fulfilled. This is the touch stone for his success.

О son of Bharata's race, one should consider it to be due to the earlier merits of a person, which prompted him to listen to the Harivamsa.

Maharsi Vyasa has collected the essence of all the Puranas, Vedas, and Smrtis, in the Harivamsa.

О Maharaja, it would be appropriate for the reciter, not to reciter Harivariisa to the denouncers of Srutis Smrtis, and the Puranas.

After listening to the recital from the orator, the listener, with controlled mind, should adore the reciter who should be glorious, illustrious, auspicious, who could pronounce the words clearly, is purified with all the three sanskaras, noble, devoid of anger and is free from controvercies.

He should be given a well populated village, the ear rings, turban, and a rosary, besides the wooden sundals, shoes, umbrella, canopy, and the mosquito net. Collecting all these things, one should offer them to the reciter in an appropriate manner. He should also be given, a bullock cart, a horse, an elephant, silken clothes, a seat of gems, five vases of copper besides a copper water-vase.

With his wife and children a devotee should delightfully decorate the reciter with ornaments. He should be clad in two garments. Then thinking of Shri Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa one should bow before him with reverence.

In case the reciter is pleased, all the gods get pleased. Therefore, the people, desirous of excellent reward for listening to Harivarhsa should not be miserly on spending over the above items.

A beautiful cow and calf should also be given to the reciter with a single, half or one fourth weight of gold.

O king, a person should please the reciter in whatever way it could be possible. When the reciter is pleased all the gods are pleased and with the pleasure of the gods, the task of the householder is accomplished.

O Janamejaya, on the completion of the recital of Harivarhsa, the reciter should be adored well, a person is relived of all the debts. All his manes then reach the eternal lokas and enjoy all the comforts there.

When the Harivarhsa is concluded, after its start, a person is relieved of all his sins and he gets all his desires fulfilled with his manes.

Thus observing all the formalities, a person, achieves the best of progeny, wealth, good health, long life, fortunes and enormous glory pretty well. There is nothing to be thought of otherwise.

Here ends chapter — 5, on glory of Harivarhsa.(Vrs. 1-38, P.T. = 15,119)

Chapter 6

Glory of Harivamsa

Janamejaya said — О best of the sages, you tell me as to how should Harivamsa be started? In what way should it be worshipped? How should Vyasa be sent off? How could one achieve the best result? You kindly speak about the same exhaustively.

Vaishampayana said — О king, I am going to speak out the way by which even a barren woman gets a child. You listen to me. During the months of Vaisakha, Magha, Kartika or in any other auspicious month, in the bright fortnight, on the days of PUrna (5,10,15), Nanda (1,6,11), Bhadra (2,7,12), and Jaya (3,8,13) on Jupiter, Venus, moon and Mercury (Thursday) in the constellations of Sravana, Hasta, Pusya, Miila, Punarvasu, Dhanistha, Mrgasira, Revati, and Asvird during the saubhagya and other auspicious times, the karana without visti, when the moon of the reciter and the listener is lodged in high place, during that period in the forenoon or in the afternoon, the learned people can start the recital of Harivamsa.

Initially, Ganapati should be worshipped, after which a pitcher or a vase should be adorned by the listerner till the completion of the recital of the book, offering the sandal paste, incense stick, fragrances, paste, lotus, champak flowers, fregrant jasmine flowers, leaves of holy basil, wood apple fruit, leaves of myrobalan, fresh roots of durba — grass, incense, lamp, coconut, fruit etc, several types of eatables, fregrant betel leaves, unbroken white rice, flywhisks, fans, the bell and other instruments should be offered. One should carry on the worship, till the book's recital is completed.

The book of Harivamsa should be given over in the hands of the reciter on an auspicious day. Thereafter the initial worship should be started.

The type of puja that is offered at the start of the recital, the same type of puja should be offered at the conclusion of the recital. The worship should be completed offering the sandal paste, incense stick, camphor, red ochre and fragrance.

Thereafter, the festivities of dance and music should be arranged. Now you listen to the charities which are to be given in the worship of the Purana.

О Janamejaya, the daksina of eighteen hundred (rupees) should be offered for the recital of the Purana. In case one is unable to give that much, then twelve hundred should be given. In case one is unable to give even that much then he should give six hundred (rupees). These have been graded as the highest, middle and the lowest types of daksinas.

Thereafter, Vyasa should be adored, offering the new clothes and by so doing the yajaman gets the highest reward.

The reciter should be given the armlets, wristlets, a crown for adoration, besides two ear rings to wear in the ears.

A pregnant cow or the one with a calf should be given О king Janamejaya — a lion among the kings a Yajamana, should also give away in charity to the reciter, a horse, and other vehicles, slaves and the slave girls. Besides these, a seat, incense, lamp, and other things like vases, bed, quilts, cushions, pillows, sweet balls, watervase, pedestal, large quantity of cereals, salt, ghee and oil should be given to an extent that these things should serve the reciter for a year. All these things should be handed over to a person, who officiates as a Vyasa.

Getting the desired boon from the reciter, the yajaman should go round him. On the completion of the recital, Brahmana reciting the Rudra-mantra, should be offered the costumes and mudras (coins) besides new blankets and copperplates.

Enough of Daksina should be given to each one of the Brahmanas. Thereafter the priest and the preceptor should be pleased giving them the costumes etc. besides the daksina.

Every Brahmana should be given enough of daksina, while honouring them. For the peaceful end of the recital, homa should also be performed. The offering of ghee, payasam, honey, sesamum seeds, cereals, should be made in the homa equivalent to a tenth of the number of vases in the book.

Or alternatively the homa should be performed with the reciting of the Gayatri hymon. Because in reality this Purina represents Gayatri-mantra.

In case one is not in a position to perform the homa, then a learned person, in order to achieve the reward of homa, should donate some gold to a Brahmana and for the shortcomings in the performance of the recital or shortage or excesses, the recitation of Visnusahasranama should be undertaken.

By so doing, all the performences are successful, because there is no better way then this. Thereafter twenty four Brahmanas, with their wives should be given the food.

Thereafter the excellent Brahmanas should be pleased offering the fragrant flowers. They should also be given daksina in gold besides gems, etc in order to please them.

О best of Bharata’s race, after the Brahmanas have taken their food, then the reciter with his wife should be seated well and served with the excellent food. They should also be offered costumes and ornaments to please them. When the Brahmanas are pleased with the performer, the gold also gets pleased with them.

At the pleasure of the reciter, even the listener achieves the best of grace. For the conclusion of the vrata, the listener earns the excellent delight. For the comletion of the vrata the performer, should donate a milking cow with gold.

In case a performer has the worth, he should got a lion throne made of three palas of gold. The book of Harivarhsa should then be placed over it with the inscription of Harivarhsa engraved on it. He should worship the book by all the means at his disposal. Thereafter he should offer the costumes, invoking it, offer costumes, ornaments, fragrace etc. Thereafter the book should be given over to acarya. By so doing, the intelligent donor is freed from all the bondages of the world.

The performing of nine days yajna is the remover of all the sins and in case it is performed in a proper manner, it bestows the desired reward, fulfills all the desires, and bestows success for all the efforts.

O son of Bharata's race, a person who complete the recital of this Purana in the prescribed manner, his wife conceives within a month.

О king, when a person performs the worship of Vyasa in an appropriate manner, and respects him appropriately, his wife surely becomes pregnant.

The several types of adorations which have been spelt out by me, by performing the same, a woman achieves an illustrious son like the sun. Even a barren lady becomes pregnant as has been spoken by Vyasa.

A Brahmana who usurps the gems, he is deprived of the progeny. For the purification of his body the recitation of Maharudra - mantra has been prescribed.

Thereafter the king Janamejaya of Bharatavamsa with faith and devotion, concentrating his mind, listened to the recital of Harivarhsa and then with a firm resolve, discarding mesiryness, adored the speaken Vyasa. Then after performing huge charities, getting blessings of Vyasadeva, started living with his wife with delight.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, with the destruction of the sins of the period earlier to the listening of Harivarhsa, the wife of high race of the yajamana conceives.

Otherwise she surely becomes pregnant in the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth or even tenth months. Their symptoms of a barren lady becoming this pregnant, have been highlighted by sage Vyasa himself.

Listening to Harivarhsa with history, a person redeems ten earlier and ten future generations.

О excellent person, I have spoken the entire glory (of listening of Harivarhsa) before you, by listening to which all the sins of a person are destroyed.

A sonless person gets a son, and a pauper achieves riches. The merits one achieves for the performing of Naramedha or Asvamedha sacrifices, the same merit is achieved with the listening of Harivarhsa.

The sinners like the killer of Brahmanas, cows and the one who enjoys sex with the wife of the preceptor, gets purified with the listening of Harivarhsa. Nothing is to be regraded otherwise in this regard.

О Janamejaya, I have recited the wonderful glory of Shri Krishna which is enormous. The one who reads it or recites it also achieves this reward is difficult to be found in the three worlds.

Here ends chapter — 6 of the glory of Harivarhsa Purana. (Vrs. 1-53, P.T. = 15,172)
